Lehi detective named Police Officer of the Year

By Linda Petersen
Lehi Police Department Detective Corporal Chad Ray was recently recognized as Police Officer of the Year by the Utah Valley Exchange Club. Ray received the award on Nov. 18 at a special presentation at the Orem La Quinta. Ray has been a detective with the Lehi Police Department since July 2014. At that time he became aware that many physical and sexual abuse cases were backlogged because of a lack of time and resources to investigate them. To address the problem, he helped organize the Special Victims Unit, which increased detectives working on those cases from two to four.
Ray was nominated for the honor by Investigations Lieutenant Toby Peterson for his work in seeing that those backlogged cases were addressed and that all physical and sexual abuse cases are now investigated in a timely manner. (Peterson was himself named Police officer of the Year in 2014 for his work in revamping Lehi City's school safety program.) "As a result of his request and determination, our case load is current," Peterson said. "Detective Corporal Chad Ray's concern and actions have provided comfort for these special victims." Ray, who had previously served as a Lehi PD officer for seven years, is a member of the Utah County Special Victims Task Force and the Child Abduction Response Team.
